About
Joe McAlister
I lead product and engineering at iwocaPay. I've made interactive art with Fast Familiar since 2017, and before that I lectured in Computer Science at Goldsmiths.
Work
I’m Head of Product & Engineering for iwocaPay, part of iwoca, where I lead product and engineering across the funnel teams. We’re changing how small businesses get paid.
I’m known for building ambitious architecture that scales, and for growing lean teams that perform.
Art
Since 2017 I’ve made work with Fast Familiar, a registered charity I run with friends and colleagues. We’ve been supported by Arts Council England, the European Commission and The Cabinet Office, and our work spent six months on show at London’s Science Gallery. I’ve been engineering director there, and I’m now CTO.
You can see a handful of my own pieces under art. All of them are from before 2020. These days the interesting work is collective.
Teaching
I used to be an academic. I lectured in Computer Science at Goldsmiths, University of London, on both the Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees, and wrote and ran modules across those programmes and MFA Computational Art. I also designed the Mobile Development module for University of London Worldwide, which has since been taken by thousands of students I’ll never meet.
Otherwise
I’ve run three and a half marathons, some as a challenge and one as a dare. I enjoyed roughly half of them, and I intend to run a few more.
Getting in touch
I don’t use social media. LinkedIn is the reliable way to reach me.
